Certain Gyro-Stabilized Electric Unicycles and Components Thereof and Products Containing the Same; Institution of Investigation

📌 ETDETA brief — importer impact summary (educational)

Brief takeaway: The ITC has opened a Section 337 patent-infringement investigation into imported gyro-stabilized electric unicycles, which could eventually lead to orders barring certain products from entering the U.S.

What changed: According to the notice, a complaint (as amended) was filed on behalf of Inventist, Inc. and Alien Technology Group, Inc. (d/b/a Alien Rides), alleging that importation and sale of certain gyro-stabilized electric unicycles and components infringe two U.S. patents. The notice states the complainants seek a general exclusion order, or alternatively a limited exclusion order, plus cease-and-desist orders. This is an institution of investigation, not a finding of any violation.

Who's affected: The notice names gyro-stabilized electric unicycles, components thereof, and products containing the same. It cites U.S. Patent No. 8,807,250 and U.S. Patent No. D729,698 as the patents at issue. Specific HTS codes and countries of origin are not stated in the notice.

What to review:
- Review whether products you import may fall within the described category of gyro-stabilized electric unicycles, components, or products containing them.
- Confirm with your customs broker or counsel whether the cited patents may be relevant to your suppliers' goods.
- Check ITC docket updates, since a general exclusion order (if issued) could affect imports regardless of source.
- Review supplier and sourcing documentation in case product identification becomes relevant later.
